Our Pet Worms

As you may have seen in a previous post, we have new class pets.  They are the worms that we are using to create compost.  Every day we have to check and see the progress that the little wigglers are making with the food scraps that we have left them.  They are excited to give me apple cores, banana peels, etc. as soon as they can!  You have never seen so many fruits and veggies ingested so that they can give the scrap away!
In the first picture the fork is pointing towards two pupal sacs.  This is where the baby worm grows up until it is ready to take on the world.
The pupal sacs are orange.  When the worm comes out they break out of one side leaving a deflated sac.
The worms actually go THROUGH the apple.  The kids think this is really cool.
Sorry if this is too gross for you - the kids think it is really cool.
