Saving a life one worm at a time

Today was such an interesting day.  Just a regular day in Kindergarten.

1. We have been learning about our worm composting all year and today was the day that we had to harvest some castings.  The reasons for that are two fold:
  • We need to take some of the castings out as too many castings are toxic to the worms and will eventually kill them.
  • The castings are rich in nutrients and we will add them to the plants to make them grow even better.
Some of them were very unsure of this whole thing and once they got over the aroma most were hard at it.  Some chose to hang back and watch the proceedings rather than dirty their hands.  At the end we took all undecomposed food and paper bits and put them back into the tub.

2. Mrs. Newman came in to read the kids a story.  Each child was given a copy of the story to take home for their own self.  These books were donated from the NWTA.  So if your child comes home with a copy of "The Kissing Hand" that is the skinny :0.  Thanks to the NWTA for their gift.

Hard at work.   Or just watching.
!
That is a portion of the worms that we harvested.  Not all but a partial writhing mess of worms.  The kids were amazed

Happily reading a book with Mrs. Newman
