This morning I put a margarine container on the table and asked the kids what was in it?
"Butter," was the unanimous response.
When I peeled up the lid to reveal some blackness, they all immediately changed their responses.
When the lid finally came off they realized there were worms!
Then the adventure began. I told them that they worms could turn newspaper and food into rich black dirt, but I didn't know how to do it. One of the little sweeties immediately said that we should look on the internet. So off we went.
- Read that we needed a plastic bin that needed holes. They thought about where they would find a drill at home and went to ask Mrs. Thompson (the queen of the school ;)) if we had drills at the school. Her reply was that the shop would have all that stuff.
- So we drilled to our hearts content so that the worms could breathe.
- Then we had to go back and see what kind of paper we needed. We realized quickly that newspaper was needed and we had none at school. So off down the hill we went.
- Had to tear up the paper and add water (worms like it that way).
- They were so excited to tell everyone about the worms.
At the end of the day the Canskate kids were finishing their snack and one of the girls wanted to put her apple core in the garbage. Well one of the Kindergarteners jumped up and said, "Don't throw it away. The worms want it!" So all the kids from K-5 had to crowd around the table and check out the worms composting away.
Ask them and see if they can tell you about it!
I apologize for the mix and match pictures. Blogger is being painful at the moment and it won't allow me to move pictures. And because the computer won't allow me to actually use a glue stick..... this won't work.
Special thanks to Carrie Thomson our school Speech Language Pathologist who came on the adventure with us and she turned it into a language adventure! She made sure that even I didn't rescue them.
